DAVE CHRISTIANSEN

ARTIST STATEMENT

My process begins with a sketchbook and a ebony pencil, starting with a line that I have no idea of where it is headed. As I add more lines with one going this way and another going that way I start to see an idea coming to life and begin to picture in my head where this could possibly end up. Once the sketch is complete, I transfer my sketch to fine watercolor paper and begin to add watercolor dyes. My brush stays loose and from my point of view, coloring outside the lines is no longer considered breaking the rules. I love the effects you can achieve and surprises that occur when the colors start running together creating wonderful hues that you would never be able to mix on a palette. After finishing with the dyes, I start working with soft pastels. This medium provides me with a fantastic choice of colors and tones. The strokes can be strong, vigorous and textured, or rubbed in and blended to create many different effects. Finally, when I feel the painting is complete or as a famous quote says “Art is never finished, only Abandoned” I pick up my sketch book and ebony pencil and let the process begin again.
